Busy term for Stamford debating team
Stamford debaters have been busy this term. The new series of “Unsafe Space” debates, organised by the sixth form debating captains, have been popular, including a debate about abortion and a more informal Question Time style debate on gender issues. A group of keen debaters visited the Cambridge Union in November. The motion for the debate was “The left is losing its way” and featured “War Horse” actor Eddie Marsan.
Stamford teams took part in the first round of the English-Speaking Union Schools’ Debating Mace at Oundle School, researching motions about the sale and consumption of meat and the power of younger voters to influence the outcome of elections. Ameena Sullivan, Chair of the adjudication panel and a senior oracy trainer for the English-Speaking Union, felt that it was an evening of entertaining and well-researched debating. Congratulations to Hannah and Lottie, a young Stamford High School team, and to Tom and Oscar, current debating captains in Year 12, who progressed to the second round with teams from Oundle and Uppingham.
