Students test their skills inside the Amazon Fulfilment Centre

Fourteen Stamford Endowed Schools A Level Design and Technology students have been invited to visit the Amazon fulfilment centre in Peterborough, to test their skills and explore the mechanisms of a production system.

The trip provided a hands-on experience to compliment the students’ A Level studies, and enabled them to investigate how goods enter, are processed and are distributed to customers from the warehouse. From viewing the vast factory, storage racks and packing lines, students were shown how the use of computer automated management speeds up the delivery process.

James Lavers, Year 13, was chosen to represent Stamford Endowed Schools, testing his skills on the assembly line. He produced and packed an amazon box, scoring 7/10 points from the trainer at Amazon, despite the note of his wonky packing tape application!

Mr Steve Newton, Head of Design Technology at Stamford School, said: “We had an excellent factory tour and it was impressive to see how quickly the items were picked, just as soon as customers had ordered them. Our tour was given by a very knowledgeable tour guide who managed to link the entire visit to our A Level course.”
