Under 16 GB squad hockey trials

A Year 11 student at Stamford High School has competed in GB hockey squad trials.

Leonie has taken part in the England U16 squad trials, having competed in county competitions and National Age Group Phase 1 and 2 selections to get to this stage. Her preparations have involved a rigorous training programme, designed to prepare junior athletes for the demands of international hockey.

Playing forward, Leonie said: “I love playing this position, as you get a rush of adrenaline throughout playing. Being forward means you need to be quick; running helped to increase my hockey game play speed and strength.” For students looking to follow in Leonie’s footsteps, she advises: “resilience is key, just keep going, and don’t give up!”

Leonie describes herself as a ‘keen sportswoman’ and has enjoyed a variety of sports from gymnastics, swimming and cricket to cross country, in her sporting career so far.  She began playing hockey when she was four years old, and joined Peterborough Hockey Club 4ths and 3rd when she joined the Stamford Schools, progressing to be selected for the Ladies 1st team in Year 9.

Looking to the future, Leonie said: “I aspire to be in the Olympics and represent my country; I watch all the ladies playing on the television and admire them so much.”
