Year 11 Debating Team Reach Regional Final
A Year 11 team from Stamford were praised for their flawless delivery and impressive performance as an up and coming team in the English-Speaking Union Schools’ Debating Mace regional final in Bedford this week. An ESU judge said that he expects to see Oscar Dixon-Spain and Tom Watson in the national final in the near future.
Having beaten teams from local schools, including Uppingham and Loughborough in the previous two rounds of the competition, the team faced more experienced Year 13 teams in the regional final and a tough motion: This House believes it is legitimate for environmental groups to use the destruction of property to further their aims
Both Tom and Oscar have been keen debaters since Year 9, are key members of the weekly debating club at Stamford School and are looking forward to chairing the second inter-schools debating shield on 8 March, when SES will be hosting teams from Oundle, Uppingham and Oakham for an afternoon of exciting debates.
Karen Leetch, who runs debating at Stamford School, commented: “Tom and Oscar worked very hard for a well-deserved place in the regional final and it’s great to see their debating skills improving by leaps and bounds. They are part of a group of very keen Year 11 debaters and I look forward to watching their progress as they move into the Sixth Form”.
