Applying to the Junior School
For older children, in particular, we recommend getting in touch with us as early as possible. It is not uncommon for waiting lists to be in place for some year groups and some families may choose to enter their child to SJS a year or two earlier than they otherwise might, in order to secure a place.
To apply, you should complete the application form and pay the registration fee of £100. The fee covers the costs of processing your application. After we have received your application, we’ll assess your child at a mutually convenient date: for the youngest children, we’ll observe them playing with others, while older children will sit tests in maths and English and spend some time in the classroom. The assessments that we use are done on a computer, and adapt to the child’s answers, so that we can build up a very accurate picture of your child’s progress to date without overwhelming or overfacing them: we find that most children enjoy the assessment process and we take time to put each child at their ease. We can also arrange a taster stay in our junior boarding house, St Michael’s.
Children join our junior school at every year group, where spaces allows, and it is common to join mid-year. Our pupils, as well as our staff, enjoy welcoming new children, both for assessment and when they start with us, and the joining process should be an interesting and enjoyable experience for you and your child.
