The Stamford Schools have announced that the existing sports facilities on the Kettering Road site are set to be redeveloped, increasing both capacity and opportunity for our students, and increasing local community access to high-quality sports facilities.
Announcing the project, Principal, Will Phelan said: “Sport at Stamford is going from strength to strength. The range of sports that we offer, and the opportunities to keep fit and active, are growing all the time. Our students are achieving local, regional and national recognition for their success in all kinds of different sports. But more importantly than anything, more and more of our students are taking in part in physical activities for the sheer joy of it, which we all know is a crucial part of any happy, healthy life. We want all of that enthusiasm, that commitment, and that growing passion to be matched by the facilities that our students can learn and train in.”
Stamford High School was founded in the late 19th century, before sport was a standard part of the curriculum for girls. Sports facilities for our High School students have evolved steadily over the years: an all-weather hockey pitch was built in 2000, they utilise netball courts situated on the Stamford Junior School site, and make use of the Sports Centre, swimming pool, and grass and Astro pitches at Stamford School. They have use of a gymnasium and changing facilities on the main High School site.
The significant increase in participation in physical activity by the students at the High School, and in the huge variety of sports that is available to them, has meant that, despite the coronavirus, we are pushing forward with plans to make sport at Stamford even better.
The proposed redevelopment of the Kettering Road site aims to facilitate this growing demand and includes the following changes:
- Minor expansion of the site and reorientation of the existing full-size hockey pitch, allowing a second pitch to be built with minimum impact on the overall footprint
- Replacement of the existing pavilion with a new facility to accommodate a fitness suite, two studios, extensive changing facilities and spectator spaces
- Enhancement of all boundaries with extensive planting of native trees and shrubs
The additional all-weather pitch will allow us to double our capacity for training and competitive fixtures on the site, which will enable greater participation at all levels. Replacement of the existing pavilion will provide changing facilities for 100 students. The two studios and fitness suite will allow us to better support the wide range of sporting activities we offer to our students, including dance, indoor cycling, Pilates and yoga, to name just a few.
All of these facilities will be made available outside school hours for use by the local community. Discussions are already underway with England Hockey regarding the formation of a new Stamford Hockey Club: at present, the nearest community clubs are based in Bourne (eight miles away) or Oundle (11 miles away).
This project will support all of our students, and the wider community, in developing a lifelong, positive attitude towards sport and physical activity, and realising the health and wellbeing benefits that come from being physically active.
Detailed information about this project is listed below.
Our Development Plan
The new building is a single-storey construction with a pitched roof, overlooking the pitches. The building has been designed to increase provision and opportunity across a wide range of sports and physical activity. Two studios will accommodate dance, pilates, yoga, indoor cycling, and a range of other activities that are growing in popularity. The building will also contain a gym, and four changing rooms with capacity for 100 people.

Respecting Our Environment
The building will be visible on the approach to Stamford, as the existing building currently is. Although the new building will be slightly larger, materials and construction are sympathetic to the location and the visible impact should be no greater.
The single storey building will be unobtrusive in the context of the local area. The boundary will be replanted with a diverse mix of native trees and hedging, providing shelter to the site, minimising the visual impact of the development, and enhancing the area as a habitat for wildlife. The existing floodlights will be replaced by modern lights, installed in a way that is sympathetic to wildlife.
The facilities will be used for PE lessons, before- and after-school coaching and practice, club practice, and weekend fixtures. The maximum hours of use are being proposed as 7:30am to 8:30pm Mondays to Fridays, 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays, and 9:00am to 1:00pm on Sundays. Outside term time, School usage will be reduced to activities such as start of season training and holiday clubs. Floodlights will be switched off no later than 9:00pm each day. Parking arrangements will be unchanged.View Document
